The Work

The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches me to identify and question stressful thoughts. It’s a way to understand what’s hurting me, and to address the cause of my problems with clarity.

At a time when she was very depressed, Byron Katie discovered that she suffered when she believed her thoughts. That suffering stopped when she questioned her stressful beliefs and discovered what was really true.

It is also my experience that stress is not caused by the people and circumstances around me, but by the incorrect (often old ) thoughts I have about them.

Our attempts to find happiness often have the opposite effect. Instead of desperately trying to adapt the world to what it "should" be, I prefer to meditate on the four questions and turnarounds of The Work. By doing this we can find our own inner wisdom and truth, and by that experience incredible freedom and peace.

How to do The Work?
* fill in a 'judge your neighbor' worksheet, you can download here.

* ask the 4 questions: 1. Is it true? 2. Can you absolutely know that it's true? 3. How do you react when you believe that thought? 4. Who would you be without that thought?

* Turn the thought around:
to yourself; to the other; to the opposite.

In spring 2019 there will be another pilgrimage with The Work in and around Monique's farmhouse in Vorden: discover the 'imperturbable peace' that many of those who experienced The Work process are speaking about. We liberate ourselves of thoughts that imprison us and go for silent walks in the beautiful Dutch scenery from the 'Achterhoek'.
